UAH to host fourth annual piano competition and festival

The Department of Music at The University of Alabama in Huntsville (UAH) is pleased to host the fourth annual UAH Piano Competition & Festival from May 4 to May 6 in Roberts Recital Hall on the UAH campus.

The event, which is intended to promote piano solo and duet playing in the area and to inspire young pianists to strive for artistic excellence, will feature both piano duet and solo competitions as well as the following:

  • Guest Recital
    Thursday, May 4, at 7:30 p.m.
    Dr. Joshua Straub will be playing Chopin’s Scherzos No. 2, 3, and 4, and Bolcom’s Rags, as well as several of his own compositions.

  • Master Class with Dr. Joshua Straub
    Friday, May 5, at 5 p.m.

  • 50th Anniversary Celebration Concert
    Friday, May 5, at 7:30 p.m.
    Performances will include improvisations in celebration of the Department’s 50th anniversary by jazz pianist Keith Taylor; Albert Lavignac’s one-piano eight-hand piece “Galop Marche” by UAH alumna Angela Beasley and current and graduating piano students; live works by guitar faculty member and UAH alumnus Phil Weaver; harpsichord works on an instrument donated by Dr. Royce Boyer; and videos from UAH alumni.

The competition portion of the event, which is open to students aged 11-18 who live in Alabama and Tennessee, will take place over all three days of the festival. It will conclude with an awards ceremony at 2:30 p.m. on Sunday, May 6.
