Judith Baumann

Nationally recognized artist, Judith Baumann will be the guest speaker for The University of Alabama in Huntsville's (UAH) Distinguished Speaker Series, April 13-14.

Baumann's UAH event entitled "Printed Matter: Lithography and Letterpress Ephemera," will be presented from noon to 1 p.m., in the Union Grove Gallery. On Friday, April 14, she will conduct "Lithography and Letterpress Open Studio," from 1 p.m., to 3 p.m., in Wilson Hall (Letterpress Studio room WH 310) and (Printshop room WH 355). The event is sponsored by the UAH Distinguished Speaker Series, Office of the Provost, and the Faculty Senate Finances and Resources Committee.

Baumann will speak about her creative research in printing contemporary fine art editions using the techniques of lithography and letterpress. Her work is deeply rooted within issues of classism, capitalism, feminism, and popular culture at its relationship to the history of print. A pop-up exhibition of printed ephemora will be on view during the lecture. The UAH community is invited to drop by the studios to see the lithography and letterpress printing processes. In the letterpress studio, art students will be printing from woodtype on an 1892 Chandler and Price Press. In the printshop, Judith Baumann will be demonstrating the lithography process.

Lithography is a 17th century process that uses limestone and a method of printing that is based on the immiscibility of oil and water. Letterpress, developed in the mid 15th century, is a process that uses movable type composed in the bed of a printing press. Printed copies are produced by repeated direct impression of an inked, raised surface against sheets of paper.
