Mark Cowherd has been named Associate Vice President for Facilities and Operations at The University of Alabama in Huntsville (UAH). Cowherd began his new duties on Wednesday, Nov. 9.

Prior to his appointment as Interim Associate Vice President for Facilities and Operations last June, Cowherd served the university for 11 years as the Executive Director of Facilities and for five years as the Director of Mechanical and Electrical Maintenance.

"As Associate Vice President for Facilities and Operations, Mark will direct the planning, design, development, construction, maintenance and renovation of campus facilities. He will also have responsibility for the Office of Environmental Health and Safety, the Grounds Management Department, Fleet Services and Custodial Services," said Ray M. Pinner, UAH Senior Vice President for Finance and Administration.

"Mark's 16 years of experience at UAH is an asset to the university and I look forward to working with him as he leads Facilities and Operations in providing an environment which is safe, comfortable, aesthetically pleasing and supports the teaching, learning and public service functions of UAH," added Pinner.

Cowherd graduated magna cum laude from Athens State University with a B.S. in Business Management and a B.S. in Management of Technology. He is a member of the Association of Energy Engineers, where he was awarded the Region II Energy Innovator of the Year in 2015 for the installation of two 200-ton heat machines. The installation saves UAH over $250,000 per year. Additionally, he was instrumental in UAH being awarded the Air Pollution Control Award in 2015 by the City of Huntsville.
