Smart Music Studio is another high school and college level practice tool, providing piano accompaniments to hundreds of published instrumental and vocal solos. The program "listens" through a microphone and follows the student's tempos, even compensating for errors such as the soloist skipping a line of music. This system is not foolproof, and particularly has trouble following strings and voices, but it does work well with wind instrument soloists. Unfortunately, a copy-protection system built into the accompaniment disks requires as much as three minutes to load accompaniments. The program will transpose the accompaniment as necessary, and the degree to which the accompaniment follows the soloist is adjustable. A tuner and practice report database are also included with the program.
