Program Notes:

Left Over Vowels (comp. & arr. by Don Bowyer)

This is a typical blues tune written in 1989 for a two-week tour of Sweden with a sextet from Chicago.  The title alludes to the presence of three extra vowels in the Swedish alphabet.  The inspiration for this work came from Thelonius Monk.

Vessel (comp. by Ken Watters;  arr. by Don Bowyer)

A jazz waltz written in December, 1999, Vessel is in a style inspired by trumpeter Kenny Wheeler.  The original, two-horn arrangement has been recorded on the upcoming CD Brothers II.  This four-horn arrangement is by Don Bowyer.

Not From Around Here (comp. & arr. by Don Bowyer)

This composition from January, 2000, is based on the concept of a fugue, although liberties are taken from the classic fugue form.  The title is a phrase heard occasionally by any newcomer to Alabama, not always under the most pleasant circumstances.  This work was inspired by Gerry Mulligan.

**********

Done It (comp. & arr. by Don Bowyer)

Written in 1992, this piece is in a more modern jazz style than most of the others in this concert.  It was inspired by Michael Brecker.

**********

Just Lookin’ (comp. & arr. by Don Bowyer)

This composition from 1991 was inspired by the music of Charles Mingus and the humor of Swedish jazz trumpeter Nils Goran "Nisse" Holstein.  It is written in a blues form, but with somewhat obscure chord changes.

Where’d the Songo? (comp. & arr. by Don Bowyer)

The songo is a Cuban style of music, based on the 2+3 rumba clave.  There is a repeated two-measure rhythm that underlies the music:

This can be heard in the bass through much of the tune, although, to be frank, ours is not a perfectly authentic imitation of the songo style.  This tune was inspired by recordings of the Buena Vista Social Club, and was written in February, 2000.
