What is LSAMP?
LSAMP stands for The Louis Stokes Alliances for Minority Participation Program.
LSAMP, supported by the National Science Foundation, was created to increase
the quality and quantity of minority students completing undergraduate programs
in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM).
What does UAH LSAMP do?
UAH LSAMP provides qualifying students with scholarships, internship experiences, and most vitally, tutorial support activities. These scholars, upon acceptance into the program, are paired with a graduate school mentor or a LSAMP staff member. LSAMP Staff and graduate school mentors are expected to monitor the academic and social progress of the LSAMP scholars in addition to serving as a solid support mechanism in every aspect of college life.
SCHOLARSHIPS:
UAH LSAMP Scholars receive a scholarship for their participation in the program to help with monetary support of their academic goals
DROP-IN CENTER:
The UAH LSAMP Drop-in Center (Shelby Center 351), the central location of the program, is a place on campus equipped with computer technology where students go to receive tutoring and skills reinforcement in their studies. Each LSAMP Scholar is required to spend at least five hours per week studying. Moreover, students meet here to participate in group study sessions. The Drop-in Center is staffed by graduate students and mentors.
MENTORING:
Each LSAMP Scholar is paired with a graduate school mentor or a LSAMP Staff member to monitor the academic and social progress of the LSAMP scholars in addition to serving as a solid support mechanism in every aspect of college life.
SEMINARS:
LSAMP Scholars are required to attend seminars geered toward enhancing themselves academically, professionally and personally. These seminars are organized by their graduate mentors and the principal investigator.
INTERNSHIPS:
LSAMP Scholars have the opportunity to participate in a summer internship program. This program provides research experiences for undergraduates by participating in hands-on research activities for eight weeks with graduate faculty mentors at UAB, Alabama A&M University, and UAH. At the end, students will present their research at the concluding ALSAMP Summer Internship Conference, at the lead institution UAB.
STATEWIDE CONFERENCES:
The LSAMP program has conferences in which the LSAMP Scholars attend to gain valuable networking opportunities with other students in Alabama and increase their professional and academic knowledge.
