About Placing Holds

What Are Holds?

A hold request prevents the current borrower from renewing the item. When the item is returned to the library, it is held for the requestor, assuming no unusual circumstances. The Circulation Department will hold the item for you for 10 days and notify you that it is available. Borrowers should take into account the current due date of an item and the urgency of their need to use the item in deciding whether to place a hold. UAH faculty, staff and students may place a hold on any item that is currently checked out by following the steps below.

How Do I Place a Hold?

The best way to place a hold is to perform the following steps:
1. Log in to iLink using your UAH I.D. number-(Do not log in as Guest).
2. Next, search for the item on which you wish to place a hold. (Remember: only items currently checked out to another patron may be placed on hold.)
3. If full record is not already displayed, click on the Details button on the left side of the screen. The item's full record must be displayed for this transaction.
4. You will see a light blue rectangular bar across the middle of the screen that looks similar to the one below:

5. Below the title and author you will see the message "No copies currently available. (Estimated wait is x days)." Click the "HOLD" button in the middle of the message. Then click the "PLACE HOLD" button on the resulting screen. That's it!
