The Special Collections held at M. Louis Salmon Library at the University of Alabama in Huntsville shelter a wealth of information pertaining to the history of the university. This history has many aspects, ranging from the political to the scientific. Within Special Collections, the section known as Archives houses the theses and dissertations produced within the university, the history and operation of the university, the Bob Jones Collection, rare books, and the many valuable research reports produced within the university. The Bob Jones collection reflects the political efforts of former Congressman Bob Jones, who represented North Alabama's fifth Congressional District for thirty years (1947-1976). Special Collections is also home to the world-renowned Space Collection. The history and development of the space program is preserved in a unique collection of documents and books. From the documentation of Saturn V rocket history to the works of Willy Ley, and now with the new Skylab collection, the space effort is both celebrated and preserved for future generations.
For additional information, contact the Special Collections office at (256) 824-6523, or e-mail Anne Coleman.
For a history of the collections, read the paper entitled The Organizational History of the Space Collections presented at the International Astronautical Congress, Vancouver, 2004.

The M. Louis Salmon Library is pleased to have been selected to house the Robert L. Forward Collection. Dr. Forward was an aerospace engineer, a physicist, a science fiction writer, and an inventor---a true renaissance man. The Robert L. Forward Collection is a unique resource and can be used for research purposes for many disciplines across campus.
Before his death in 2002, Forward was a consulting scientist, future technologist,
lecturer, and science fact and science fiction writer. He was Owner and
Chief Scientist of Forward Unlimited, a consulting firm established in 1962,
specializing in exotic physics and advanced space propulsion, and Partner
and Chief Scientist of Tethers Unlimited, a partnership formed in 1994 with
Dr. Robert P. Hoyt, specializing in highly-survivable space tethers. The
UAH archives department maintains Dr. Forward's original
web site.
The Salmon Library has recently received the architectural collection of Harvie P. Jones, F.A.I.A. The collection consists of 1032 books and about 20 shelf feet of journals, catalogs, and professional literature. In addition, the collection contains about 75 photograph notebooks with photographs and accompanying consulting notes for buildings, both domestic and corporate.
Harvie P. Jones (1930-1998)
was a graduate of Georgia Tech and formed the company Jones & Herrin
in Huntsville, Alabama. He became actively interested in historical preservation
in the 1970’s when the firm of Jones and Herrin was asked to construct
a site commemorating the site of Alabama’s Constitutional Convention
in 1819, creating the very popular Constitutional Hall Village.
