Eminent Scholars

The Eminent Scholar Program began as the result of a state-sponsored program that was supplemented by UAH funding efforts and a Challenge Grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities. Under this program, every other year the Humanities Center, in cooperation with a selected department in the College of Liberal Arts, conducts a national search for a scholar who is a truly outstanding national figure in one of the humanities fields. The position of Eminent Scholar rotates between the disciplines within the humanities. The responsibilities of the Eminent Scholar are to teach, speak in the community, engage in scholarly interaction with faculty and students on campus, and participate in symposia.

The Humanities Center subsequently began to consider proposals inviting eminent scholars in the humanities for shorter terms, (1-2 week) visits to UAH. Departments are encouraged to consider this option, using the same criteria to identify potential candidates as those used for full-term visits.
