Faculty Research Grants
Annually, the Humanities Center awards faculty research grants. Listed below are guidelines with a link for a printable page detailing the format that should be used in submitting proposals.
There are reporting requirements associated with research grants. For this reason, it is important that you record your achievements and the Center's support for them. Also, each grant completed proposal and final report to that office as well.
The maximum grant award is $3,000. The deadline for application will be announced at a later date. Application for support from other funding agencies (including the University's Mini-Grant Program) is encouraged and may be made simultaneously.

The Faculty Research Grant Program of the Humanities Center is designed to encourage growth and development of research and teaching among the members of the faculty at UAH. The program will support basic academic research in the humanities or projects that contribute to the teaching and study of the humanities at UAH. The humanities are defined as literature, history, language, and philosophy; however, the Center's Program will support projects in other disciplines that are related to the humanities by methods or concerns. The program is not intended for support of work that is part of a scheduled course, part of a sponsored research project already in progress, or work needed to satisfy requirements for a degree. It is hoped that the activities sponsored by the Humanities Center will encourage the growth of external funding for the teaching, research, and service in areas related to the humanities.
All full-time faculty members of the University of Alabama in Huntsville who are applying for assistance with humanities-related projects are eligible.
Proposals should include clear and complete narrative account of proposed projects. They should include what is to be done, why, and how. Since the Committee consists of faculty members from various fields of study, the language used in proposals should be simple and free from technical terminology. Proposals should clearly indicate dates for the completion of projects. Normally, this should be no longer than twelve months from beginning dates.
Proposals should follow the format provided here. They should not exceed six double-spaced pages plus the budget and cover pages. The method for submitting proposals will be included and made simultaneously with the announcement of the closing date for submissions. Each proposal must include a detailed budget with explanation. The Committee may be able to make awards of up to $3,000, but not uncommonly the group has awarded lesser amounts. Appropriate budget items are:
- Salaries and Wages (Funds may be used to support salaries and wages for individuals such as typists or research assistants if their work is important to the completion of the project.)
- Operating Expenses (Office supplies, duplicating, and the like)
- Travel (As justified in the narrative)
- Books, Periodicals, Microfilm
- Purchase of such items should be made only when they cannot be procured through procedures for which library funds exist, or when they are not available through inter-library loan, and when they are critical for the project.
- Duplications of Library holdings are not normally allowed.
- All materials shall be ordered through the Library. When the items are received and catalogued, the Library will issue the items to the grantee for a period of time not to exceed the authorized closing date of the project. All materials will be returned to the Library at the completion of the project and will become part of the permanent collection.
The principal elements considered in evaluating a proposal are its relevance to UAH's mission of scholarship and research in the humanities, the proposal's intrinsic merit, and its overall cost. Specific proposal-related evaluation criteria are:
- Unique and innovative methods, approaches, or concepts demonstrated by the proposal;
- The proposer's capabilities, related experience, techniques, or unique combination of these factors for achieving the aims of the project;
- Potential contribution of the effort toward the development of more detailed research proposals for external funding;
- Realistic assessment of costs and planned expenditures within the guidelines;
- Adherence to instructions and program purpose;
- Value to advancement of knowledge about or the study of the humanities at UAH.
The committee will meet within two weeks of the closing date for submissions to review the proposals. Based on the recommendation of the Steering Committee, the selected proposers will be notified of awards immediately afterwards by Director of the Humanities Center. Information for the establishment of grant accounts will be sent to award winners.
Since a grant is made for a specific purpose, any significant changes in scope or direction must be approved by the Director of the Humanities Center. The grantee must assure that funds are expended in accordance with relevant policies of the University. Submission of a proposal warrants that all over-runs on any grant account are the responsibility of the grantee.
Any funds remaining unspent at the end of the award period (1 calendar year) will be returned to the Faculty Grant Program. A final summary report describing work attempted and accomplished is required at the end of the award period. A copy of any publication resulting from grant-supported research projects should be sent to the Humanities Center. Further, any publication resulting from grant-supported research must include the following printed acknowledgement:
- Research for this project was supported by the UAH Humanities Center.
