Joseph Lee, Instructor
Joseph Lee, conductor, is currently the Music Director of the Murfreesboro Symphony Orchestra, Resident Conductor of the Huntsville Symphony Orchestra, Music Director of the University Orchestra at Sewanee: The University of the South, and Music Director of the Huntsville Youth Orchestra. Mr. Lee has appeared with a diverse group of performers including Grammy award winning artists Eileen Ivers and Immigrant Soul, the world-famous Canadian Brass, Riders in the Sky, Tony Award nominee Jodi Benson, and other Broadway stars including Gary Mauer, Julia Murney, Virginia Woodruff, and Burke Moses. Mr. Lee has conducted HSO's Family Concerts, Pops Concert, Casual Classics, Young Peoples’ Concerts, and conducts annually Tchaikovsky’s Nutcracker with the Huntsville Ballet Association.
Mr. Lee is Principal Conductor of the Campamento Internacional de Musica Pochote (Costa Rica), Music Director of the Tennessee Valley Music Festival, Music Director of the Signal Mountain Music Festival (TN), and serves often on the conducting staff of the Sewanee Summer Music Festival. In the Spring of 2011, Mr. Lee returned to his alma mater to serve a one-semester appointment at Vanderbilt’s Blair School of Music as Adjunct Assistant Professor of Orchestra and Conducting. In addition to his regular conducting activities, Mr. Lee frequently travels the Southeast US and Central America leading clinics, adjudicating band and orchestra festivals, and guest conducting. In Summer of 2012, he will guest conduct Costa Rica’s Orquesta Manuel Maria Gutierrez and will return to Costa Rica in October of 2012 to conduct the Chamber Orchestra of the University of Costa Rica. Mr. Lee has served as Assistant Conductor of the Vanderbilt University Orchestra, Music Director of the Vanderbilt Opera Theater, and Music Director/Conductor of the Shoals Symphony Orchestra.
Mr. Lee has conducted the Mannes College of Music Orchestra, Philadelphia Singers, the Parnu City Orchestra (Estonia), Bohuslav Martinu Philharmonic (Czech Republic), and others with world renowned instructors including Kenneth Keisler, Otto Werner Mueller, Christoph Eschenbach, Neeme Jarvi, Paavo Jarvi, David Hayes, and Duain Wolfe. In July of 2006, Mr. Lee conducted in two concerts of David Oistrakh Music Festival (Parnu, Estonia) that were broadcast by Estonian National Radio. In May of 2007, he traveled to Russia to conduct the Moscow Symphony Orchestra while studying conducting with Maestro Kenneth Keisler.
Mr. Lee graduated cum laude from Vanderbilt University where he received a bachelor of music in bassoon performance and a minor in voice. Conducting teachers and mentors include maestros Robin Fountain, Taavo Virkhaus, James Paul, and Carlos Miguel Prieto.
