UAHuntsville host Poetry Out Loud Recitation Competition for high school students

Poetry Out Loud (POL) is coming back to The University of Alabama in Huntsville (UAHuntsville). The national recitation contest for high school students’ grades 9-12 encourages the study of great poetry through memorization, performance, and competition. Students from public or private schools in 13 northeast Alabama counties are eligible to participate.

The National Endowment for the Arts (NEA), the Poetry Foundation, UAHuntsville and the Huntsville Literary Association (HLA) have partnered with State Arts Agencies of the United States to create Poetry Out Loud. Contest coordinator for Alabama Region V is Dr. Rose Norman, professor and chairperson of the UAH English Department. The program takes approximately two to three weeks of class time and takes place between September and January.

Last year, two students from our region took top prizes for original poetry at the state competition, and two others were state finalists in the performance of poetry from the POL anthology.

The 13 counties in Alabama Region V are Madison, Limestone, Jackson, Morgan, Marshall, DeKalb, Cullman, Blount, Etowah, Cherokee, St. Clair, Calhoun and Cleburne. There is no charge to participate but schools must register by Tuesday, Sept. 15.

POL school competitions are held in October. Each student recites two poems for the school wide competition. School judges should come from outside the school. Winning students and their teachers will attend Finding Your Voice, a four-hour intensive poetry workshop at UAHuntsville on Friday, Oct. 23 in the University Center to prepare students for the Regional, State and National competitions.

Regional semi-finals will be the university on Friday, Nov. 20 in the Pei-Ling Chan Auditorium. Each student memorizes and recites three poems from the POL anthology, and each student is required to write an original poem to recite in the Original Poetry Competition.

The state competition will be February 27 at Huntingdon College in Montgomery. Prizes include state champion $200 plus the winner’s school is awarded a $500 library prize; first runner-up school prize receives $200 library award; and state champion wins chaperone travel to Washington, DC for the national POL finals (all expenses paid).

The POL national competition will be next April in Washington, DC. A total of $50,000 is awarded in scholarships during the event. The champion receives a $20,000 scholarship and finalists receive $5,000 and $1,000 awards.
