| UAHuntsville among top Alabama schools in alumni earnings survey Graduates of The University of Alabama in Huntsville are among the highest paid alumni when compared to earnings from seven state universities included in a new regional and national survey.
Among alumni from 166 southern colleges and universities ranked by Payscale.com, Auburn and UAHuntsville graduates ranked 24th and 25th; University of Alabama (Tuscaloosa) alumni were 32nd.
The website collected self-reported salary information from 1.2 million people who earned bachelor's degrees from 597 colleges and universities in the U.S., including 166 "southern" schools from Delaware to Texas. The non-scientific survey reports median starting and mid-career (at least 10 years after graduation) salaries.
"This reinforces what we have been saying about the outstanding return on investment that the state receives for its investment in higher education," said Gordon Stone, executive director of the Alabama Higher Education Partnership. "It makes our point very well."
While salaries earned by graduates from UAHuntsville, AU and UA finished in the top 20 percent of southern schools in the survey, officials said the most meaningful data comes from comparing salary information from schools in Alabama and the closest states.
"The cost of living is going to have a big effect on these numbers," said Dr. Al Wilhite, chairman of the Economics and MIS Department in the UAHuntsville business school. "Schools in big cities or other areas where the cost of living is high are likely to have somewhat inflated salary numbers because of that elevated cost of living."
Among public university alumni in Alabama and its surrounding states, only Georgia Tech and University of Florida alumni had higher mid-career salaries than graduates from the top three Alabama universities.
Among southern schools, the top-ranked "mid-career" salaries were reported for alumni from Duke University, Georgetown University and Georgia Tech. Nationally, alumni from Dartmouth, MIT and Harvard reported the highest salaries.
