| UAHuntsville to host "Study of the U.S. Institute" for South Asian student leaders The University of Alabama in Huntsville (UAHuntsville) will host a Study of the U.S. Institute (SUSI) for 20 student leaders from South Asia from June 28 to July 29. The five-week program is part of a broader U. S. Department of State initiative designed to promote a better understanding of America abroad and to help develop future world leaders.
The UAHuntsville Office of International Programs and Services (OIPS) has organized a program that includes the study of U.S. democracy, race relations, gender issues, and religious diversity and tolerance. Student guests from Bangladesh, India, and Pakistan will have the opportunity to experience Huntsville's hospitality and recreational opportunities.
UAHuntsville SUSI program highlights include tracing the Selma to Montgomery National Voting Rights Trail; volunteering for a Habitat for Humanity home-building project in Huntsville; and visiting the First Amendment Center in Nashville and the Amish community in Ethridge, Tenn. Students will also tour CNN and the Carter Center in Atlanta; interact with Huntsville host families; and visit diverse local places of worship. The UAHuntsville community is invited to attend two SUSI events that are free and open to the public. The first event is an evening of American Blues with local musicians Microwave Dave and the Nukes on Friday, July 10, at 7:30 p.m., in the Chan Auditorium located in the Business Administration Building on the UAHuntsville campus. The second event is a colloquium on Friday, July 24, at 9:30 a.m., in the Shelby Center room 107 on the UAHuntsville campus. During the colloquium, visiting students will present their SUSI projects and share cultural displays from their home countries.
Six SUSI programs will be conducted at the same time across the U.S. Approximately 120 student leaders will arrive in the United States in late June to take part in programs at select institutions. The program culminates in a conference in Washington, D.C., where the students make presentations highlighting their learning experiences. The U.S. Department of State is supplying the grant under the Fulbright-Hays Act. The purpose of the program is to foster mutual understanding between the people of the United States and the people of other countries. Participating institutions include UAHuntsville; Southern Illinois University, Carbondale; University of Minnesota; University of Arkansas, Fayetteville; Nazareth College and Green River Community College.
