| Reception to honor Royce Boyer's service, commitment to UAHuntsville "Beginning a new tradition," is the phrase Professor Emeritus D. Royce Boyer used to entice students to join the first choir at the University of Alabama in Huntsville. That was over four decades ago, and led to the creation of the UAH Choir beginning with 30 talented students.
Dividing his time as music instructor and choir director, Boyer established UAHuntsville's music department. Within a few years, he had 10 percent of the student body into various choral groups and over the years directed three choral groups: the UAH Choir, Premier Singers and the Huntsville Village Singers.
Beginning as a faculty of one, Dr. Boyer built the foundation for a music department that now consists of over 30 faculty members who have performed nationally and internationally. "I am really proud of the university and the Music Department," said Boyer. "Since my retirement they have doubled the programs. I appreciate the good leadership, academic standards and the high quality of students attracted to the university's programs."
Boyer remains involved with the university and the department of music. "I am looking forward to UAHuntsville's Wind Ensemble at the Von Braun Center on the 7th of February. They are playing all Bernstein; it should be a great show."
Dr. Boyer recently established the D. Royce Boyer Endowment Fund, in the amount of $600,000 to support the efforts of the College of Liberal Arts. This testamentary gift, in the form of a bequest, will establish a performance fund for the Music Department; create an endowment fund for a student in the Music Department to study abroad; and contribute to the Professor Boyer Music Scholarship Fund established in 1998.
In honor of Dr. D. Royce Boyer, UAHuntsville will host a reception to celebrate his continued service and commitment to the Department of Music and the Huntsville community. The event will take place at the Lowe House Friday on February 6th at 6:30pm.
