Mark C. Smith Presidential Scholarship Established
A presidential scholarship in memory of Mark C. Smith has been established by Linda and Clay Smith, through the Linda and Mark Smith Family Foundation. His wife, Linda, and son Clay, presented UAH President David Williams with a memorial gift on Mark’s birthday, Sept. 10th.
The scholarship will be awarded to an undergraduate or graduate student pursuing a degree in the College of Administrative Science.
Mark Smith passed away in March, and is survived by Linda and their two children, Clay and Cynthia, and seven grandchildren.
He will be remembered as a technology icon, corporate businessman, philanthropist and a special friend of the university. He co-founded ADTRAN 21 years ago and served as the CEO until September 2005.
Mark received an Honorary Doctor of Science from UAH in 1986 and served on the College of Administrative Science Business Advisory Council for many years.
Other awards he received included being inducted into the State of Alabama Engineering Hall of Fame in 1995, "Entrepreneur of the Year" in the High Technology/Electronics category-Southeastern Division, Georgia Tech’s Distinguished Engineering Alumni Award recipient and the "2004 Lifetime Achievement Award" from the Alabama Information Technology Association.
Mark and Linda have long been advocates and supporters of UAH. Endowing a presidential scholarship, in Mark’s memory, continues their legacy of giving with UAH.
