UAHuntsville research on display for public view

Did you know? The University of Alabama in Huntsville operates a research facility on Redstone Arsenal that is a quarter-of-a-mile long and has a device that propels objects at 10 times the speed of sound? The university’s Aerophysics Research Center provides research on hypervelocity physics, measuring the impact for armor and air defense targets as well as meteoroid impacts.

Did you know? UAH biotechnology researchers are collaborating with the University of Wales in Great Britain and the World Health Organization to find ways to control the spread of malaria by controlling the mosquitoes that spread the disease.

Did you know? A UAH professor is one of the leading experts on global climate change and was among the authors of a United Nations report that was cited for a Nobel Peace prize this year.

Did you know? UAH is the only university in America that has the capability to test propulsion concepts using liquid oxygen and liquid methane, and the university’s Propulsion Research Center has a combustion instability tool of which there is only one in the United States and three in the world.

These projects and scores of other research endeavors can be seen at the first UAH Research Expo — "Solutions through knowledge."

The expo is scheduled for Tuesday, Nov. 13, 2007 at the Shelby Center for Science and Technology on the UAHuntsville campus. The expo begins at 9 a.m. and goes through 3 p.m. The public is invited to this free event.

"Our research and scholarship is really quite remarkable for a university of our size and age," said Ron Greenwood, vice president of research for UAHuntsville. "Our faculty and students are using the knowledge they have gained on campus to confront and solve some of the great challenges and mysteries not just for our planet, but for the universe as well.

"The scope of research that our faculty and students are engaged in is quite exciting, and we want to share these compelling developments with the community."

Researchers will be on hand during the day to provide details of their research from the five colleges, School of Graduate Studies and 17 research centers.
