UAH cross country teams headed to national meet

For the first time in UAH Cross Country history, both men's and women's teams are headed to the Division II National Championships.

It marks the first time for the Charger men and the third for the Lady Chargers who return to the national stage for the first time since 2005. The UAH men's team tied for second in the 10K race with the University of Tampa, sending both teams to the National Championship, which will be held in Joplin, Mo. on November 17th. It was the highest finish ever for the Chargers.

Florida Southern College tallied 61 points to claim first place and earn the third qualifier at the championships. UAH and Tampa each tallied 103 points, bumping off region power Harding University was just outside of the qualifiers in fourth place with 106 points.? ?Four runners earned individual qualifying spots, finishing in the top five in the race. Emmanuel Kirwa of Benedict was the overall winner with a time of 31:53.9. James Cheruiyot of Harding was second at 31:58.4, while Abraham Kiprotich (Morehouse) was third at 32:16.8 and Nao Asano (West Georgia) made the field finishing fifth at 32:32. Senior Brandon York (Tuscaloosa) was the Chargers top finisher, crossing the line seventh with a time of 32.42.2, earning All-Region honors. Sophomore Mark Temple (Huntsville) also earned a spot on the All-Region team, finishing 11th with a career-best 10K time of 33:11.9. Freshman Nathan Milles (Flower Mound, Tex) just missed the top 15, but also had a career-best time, crossing the line 17th at 33:34. Sophomore Will Rogers (Denton, Tex) beat his personal 10K mark by 35 seconds, finishing 28th with a time of 34:14.1. Senior Sean Allan (Fort Payne) rounded out the UAH scorers at 51st (34:48). In the women's race, the University of Tampa had all five of their runners finish in in the top 15 en route to the Regional Championship. Tampa claimed first place with 40 points. Harding and UAH finished the race with 55 and 79 points respectively to join Tampa in Joplin. The Lady Chargers' third place finish equalled their best finish ever, which came in 2005.

Janee Jones of Harding was the South Region champion, finishing first with a time of 21:17.4. Laura Woznicki (Tampa) was second at 21:19, while Caitlin Heider (UAH) was third, blowing away the UAH 6K record at 21:37.2. Carolyne Kwambai of Florida Southern College and Carolyn Horst of Florida Tech also qualified for the nationals as the top two individuals not affiliated with a qualifying team. Kwambai finished eight at 22:08.4, while Horst was 10th with a time of 22:48.8. Junior Erin Zellers (Red Lion, Pa.) also landed a spot on the All-Region team, finishing sixth. She also beat the old UAH 6K record with a time of 22:00. Freshman Gwen Kyser (Huntsville) and senior Natalie Hamilton (Fort Payne) nearly finished together crossing the line with career-best times at 19th and 20th. Kyser ran a time of 23:10.3, while Hamilton clocked a mark of 23:13.8. Junior Reah Lee (Fairhope) also logged a career-best time rounding out the UAH finishers at No. 34 at 23:51.2.? .
