On November 3, 2012, ILC student Bin Chen, pictured here with Mayor Tommy Battle, was one of 150 volunteers who arrived at the Holmes Avenue Park to install new playground equipment for the children in the area. First, the team dug up and moved soil to level the surface. Next, the volunteers built and anchored the large slides and jungle gyms. To make the area safe and padded for children, they finished by laying mulch over the entire play zone.
Volunteers received lunch for their efforts, and Bin was very happy to meet Huntsville’s mayor, Tommy Battle, who also came to help with the park project. When asked why he chose to participate in this service opportunity Bin explained, “I was born in a small village in Fujian Province, China, and I didn’t have this form of entertainment as a kid, so I wanted to help these children and give them the opportunity to enjoy this kind of play area.”
Bin highly recommended this volunteer experience to fellow students, citing a snowball effect. “It was meaningful,” said Bin. “When the children grow up they will remember this and maybe give time to help other children.”
