The 457(b) Plan is also a voluntary, defined-contribution, tax-deferred as well as Roth after-tax plan governed by Internal Revenue Code 457(b). Similar to the 403(b) plan, the 457(b) plan offers the same expanded investment options, convenient payroll deductions, pre-tax contributions, and tax-deferred growth through both TIAA-CREF and VALIC.
University employees may also contribute to RSA-1 457(b) retirement plan through the Teachers' Retirement Systems of Alabama.
Participants under age 50 can contribute up to $17,500 pre-tax to to the 457(b) plan in 2013. (If you participate in the 403(b) plan, you can also contribute $17,500 for a total of $35,000).
Participants age 50 or over can contribute up to $23,000 pre-tax to the 4573(b) plan in 2013 (If you participate in the 403(b) plan, you can also contribute $23,000 for a total of $46,000).
The above limits include Roth contribution amounts.
