International Travel

When traveling outside the United States, Faculty and Staff will have access to healthcare providers and emergency medical services through the BlueCard Worldwide®Program. For more information regarding claims processing and to search for a provider or hospital, click here.

Eligibility

Definition of Eligible Dependents and Required Documents

The University requires all regular full-time employees to carry health insurance as a condition of employment. Waiver of this policy may be granted for those who provide evidence of substantially equivalent coverage through another group or an individual policy. Enrollment must occur within the first 30 days of employment or within 30 days of a family status change (marriage, divorce, birth, death, or loss of coverage). Coverage may begin the effective date of employment or the first day of the following month.

Open Enrollment

Health Insurance Open Enrollment is held between mid-October through mid-November each year with changes to be effective January 1st. Individuals wishing to add or delete dependent coverage due to a change in family status (marriage, divorce, birth of children) may do so outside of open enrollment within 30 days of the status change.

Premiums

Employee and UAH share the cost, with UAH contributing a fixed amount each month toward the single and family contracts. Employee contributions are made from pre-tax dollars meaning no state or federal taxes are paid on premiums.

Waiting Periods

There is a 90-day waiting period for pre-existing conditions for participants over the age of 19. The waiting period is waived for employees transferring from other medical coverage if they provide a "certificate of coverage" from the prior health insurance carrier and there was not a lapse in coverage of more than 63 days.
