The Text for MA 238

(Applied Differential Equations)

Spring 2010

Prepared by Prof. Kenneth Howell,

Department of Mathematical Sciences, UAH'ville

Below are links to the chapters of the Spring 2010 version of the text for MA 238.  Hardcopies of are available at the UAH'ville Bookstore for a reasonable fee.

You will need a program such as Adobe Reader to read these files.  If you don't have Adobe Reader or a recent version (at least version 7 -- some of the earlier versions didn't display all the math that well) go to the Adobe Reader Download Page.

Some Comments and Warnings:

1)  The formatting of the files here differs slightly from that in the hardcopies sold in the bookstore.  What is in the bookstore was formatted to be printed on both sides of each sheet of paper.  What is here is formatted for "single-sided" printing.

2)  Most computer labs on campus have restrictions on the use of their printers.  Please honor those restrictions.  They help ensure a more fair distribution of resources.  If possible, print these notes at home, on your own printer.  (Suggestion:  Get a ream of 3-hole punched paper at a place like Staples or Office Depot, along with a really big three-ring binder.)

3)  Some of the chapters contain material that is not part of the course.  This is material that would be nice to cover if there was time.  Feel free to read unassigned sections on your own for your own enlightenment.

4)  Beware of tpyos and dumb mistakes!  Much of what's below was written hastily and at odd hours, and was not adequately proofread.  If you find what you believe to be an error in any of these chapters, please let me know ("Me" being Prof. Ken Howell,  howell@math.uah.edu).  It would be appreciated if you included " DE Text " in the subject line of your email.

4)  As errors are found and corrected, the files at this site will be updated.  You may want to occasionally check to upload the corrected versions.

5)  Feel free to send any comments about this webpage and this text to howell@math.uah.edu .
