FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions)

Who may join the Honors College?

All qualified, seriously committed students are encouraged to participate in the Honors College. See Honors Colleeg Admission Requirements for complete information.

Does it cost more for Honors courses or the Honors College?

No. Honors courses are counted as regular courses for tuition, scholarship and academic load purposes. The Honors College does not have any additional application fees or membership/maintenance fees.

Is there scholarship support in the Honors College?

Students should comply with the application guidelines of the Financial Aid Office in order to be eligible for UAH's scholarship programs. While Honors students are eligible for a wide range of UAH scholarships (see UAH Financial Aid for more information) there are currently no scholarships that are intended only for Honors Students.

Are Honors courses harder than regular courses?

No. Honors courses have somewhat different content that's intended to benefit serious students. They are not meant to overburden or to damage your university experience. Honors courses treat learning as a challenging, rewarding and joyous endeavor. Some material will be covered in more depth than in regular courses or with more rigor, but this does not mean more work, just different work.

Are Honors courses taken in addition to the rest of my major/minor/general courses? Will it take me longer to graduate?

No, Honors courses are developed so that they count in place of (not in addition to) your normally required courses. For example, Honors English is taken instead of regular English courses, etc. Interdisciplinary seminars and other HON courses count as normal electives toward graduation. Honors students do not usually have to take extra course hours to graduate.

Is academic advisement available for Honors students?

Absolutely! An important benefit of the Honors College is the individualized advisement available to students. Honors students need to plan their coursework carefully so that they can take full advantage of special Honors opportunities and move efficiently toward their degrees. The Honors Coordinator and college advisors will provide this help.

Do scholastic honors and recognition come with participation in the Honors College?

Yes. All Honors coursework is noted on the transcript and an explanation of the academic distinction inherent in Honors education is attached. Students who participate fully in the Honors College by completing the required 24 hours including the Honors Thesis will be recognized at graduation and in other formal ceremonies commemorating academic excellence.

Do Honors courses give additional grade points, as in some high school advanced placement courses?

No, the grade point scale in Honors courses is the same as in all other courses.

I started my freshman year with credit already (e.g., Advanced Placement) for EH 101 and EH 102. Do I have to take EH 105 to receive Honors credit or will I get Honors credit for my classes in which I have already taken or placed out of?

No, you do not have to go back and take EH 105, but you do not get Honors credit for AP credit for 101 and 102. You may use one of the many other options for Honors hours (see Courses). Note that although EH 105 fulfills the same GER requirement as EH 101 and 102, it is ;not a combination of those two courses. EH 105 has different content to emphasize its Honors orientation.

Is graduating in the Honors College the same as "graduating with Honors" (e.g., "cum laude")?

No. Graduating with Honors (sometimes called "Latin Honors") is based solely on your GPA when you graduate. An Honors Diploma is a special accomplishment acknowledging that you have completed the richer, more demanding curriculum of the Honors College.

I tried to register for an Honors course and it says I have a "Test Score / Prereq Hold". What does that mean?

Only Honors students may register for Honors courses without permission. If you're sure you're an eligible Honors student, check with the Honors Office. If you're not an Honors student, you should wait until early registration is over and then contact the Honors Office; you may be able to take the course if there is still room in the course AND you qualify. See Courses for more information.

I have dual enrollment/advanced placement credit. Do they count toward the Honors Diploma?

In general, dual enrollment or advance placement courses do not count as Honors credits, unless they are specifically denoted as an Honors course. Honors courses taken at other colleges or universities may qualify as Honors credit at UAH if the Dean approves it.

I'm a member of an honor society, such as Alpha Lambda Delta or Phi Kappa Phi. Does this mean I'm in the Honors College? Can I take Honors classes?

No, the Honors College is an academic college with its own curriculum and courses. Although many students in the Honors College are eligible for membership in honor societies, Honors students must apply and be admitted to the Honors College in order to be eligible for most Honors courses
