Our current Honors student in the spotlight is Deena Zahran. Deena is one of 21 seniors graduating from the Honors Program this academic year.

Where did you attend high school and what activities were you involved in?

I'm originally from Florence, Alabama, but I attended Bob Jones High School in Madison, AL. I was involved with French club, Red Cross Club, Health Occupations Students of America (HOSA), and the National Honor Society.

I would like to note that high school was my initial introduction to my current passion in life…nursing. I took a Health Science course in high school which allowed us to shadow nurses in different medical facilities around Huntsville. I was with so many nurses in that span of time, and I learned so much from them. I developed such a deep respect for the career and chose to follow it throughout college.

What's your class/major here at UAHuntsville and what are your plans for furthering your edcuation?

I am a senior at UAH majoring in Nursing. After graduation, I plan on working as a cardiac nurse and attending the UAH graduate program to get my MSN (Master's in Nursing).

What do you ultimately see yourself doing career-wise?

I ultimately see myself continuing my education and becoming a nurse practitioner and opening up my own cardiovascular clinic. I plan to be fully involved in nursing research to provide evidence-based practice to the nursing practice.

What else are you involved in at UAH?

I am involved in Sigma Theta Tau, the National Society of Leadership and Success, Let's Pretend Hospital and I serve as the Public Relations Officer for the Senior Management Team. I have also held the position of Vice President of the Honors Program Student Council.

What are your thoughts on the Honors Program and how has it impacted your time here at UAH?

My thoughts on the Honors Program: Being a part of the Honors Program is such a privilege. My Honors courses have expanded my knowledge and improved my judgement. I am able to apply my nursing skills in ways beyond a lot of my peers. My research skills have greatly improved while being a part of the Honors Program. This skill will allow me to provide evidence-based practice to my patient care. This will grant my patients the best and most effective quality care. I have also had the chance to meet so many amazing, inspiring members of the Honors Program. I like that the Honors Program is so diverse and open to all students. Engineers, business majors, nurses, liberal arts majors, etc. are all welcome to the program. This made the program worthwhile , and full of inspiration. I am so proud and honored to be a part of such a program.
