Human Resource Development (HRD) Travel Support


The program provides three types of domestic travel support for undergraduate students, graduate students, faculty members, post-doctoral associates and researchers involved in energy related research to:  1) encourage the initiation and ongoing relationship with one of the ten world-class laboratories managed by the DOE Office of Science, 2) promote the utilization of DOE national user facilities,  3) increase intellectual collaboration between Alabama researchers and DOE scientists, and 4) disseminate results of DOE supported research.   • Brief Visit to a DOE National Laboratory
    • Purpose
      • Initial meeting and research discussion
    • Duration
      • 2-5 days

 o   Cost

      • Travel cost reimbursement up to $ 1500.00 (example:  DOE $ 1000, match $ 500)


  • Extended Visit to a DOE National Laboratory
    • Purpose
      • Stay for an extended period of time to conduct research
    • Duration
      • Up to a semester in length
    • Cost
      • Total cost up to $ 5000.00 (example: DOE $ 3,333, match $ 1,667)
      • Any item appropriate to the extended visit (i.e. housing, food, lab fees, transportation costs, etc.)


  • Presentation at a National Conference
    • Purpose
      • Present results of energy-related research
      • Emphasis on meetings with significant DOE presence
    • Duration
      • 2-5 days
    • Cost
      • Travel cost reimbursement up to $ 1500.00 (example:  DOE $ 1000, match $ 500)

Please provide a one-page description of the travel plans and expected benefit of the visit/stay and a budget. The required match should be identified in the budget statement provided.  This normally is cash (supporting the travel plan with the remainder coming from DOE/EPSCoR.  In some cases, it can be all DOE/EPSCoR funds for the actual travel with in-kind matching (faculty time, etc.) committed to the travel task.   All travel should be completed by July 31, 2015.
