Matching Gifts
Over 1,000 companies and corporate foundations can match their employees' gifts to UAH. Under
these matching gift programs, contributions made by a company's eligible employees to non-profit
organizations that meet the company's guidelines are matched with company or corporate foundation funds.
Two aspects will be of particular interest to you:
1) Matching gifts benefit the UAH program that you designated your gift for, thus doubling the impact
of your investment.
2) Even if you don't work for a matching gift employer, your gift may still qualify for matching if
your spouse works for a matching gift company and your gift was made from a joint checking account.

How important are matching gifts?
Matching gifts are an important source of contributions at UAH. Each year, nearly 100 donors have their
gifts matched. This has resulted in corporate matching gifts totaling nearly $100,000 over the past
several years.
In most cases, UAH received dollar-for-dollar matches. But in some cases it was higher as companies
doubled or even tripled the gift of the employee. The amount of the match and requirements are
established by each employer.
How can I make a matching gift?
If you or your spouse are affiliated with a company that matches gifts to higher education, you may be
eligible to have your gift to UIAH doubled or more. Because each employer has different requirements,
you or your spouse will need to contact the personnel office for matching gift information. The personnel
office will provide the company's matching gift form. Please complete the matching gift form and send it
with your gift to:
University Development
The University of Alabama in Huntsville
Shelbie King Hall Suite 300
Huntsville, Alabama 35899
UAH will process your form and notify your employer. Matching gifts count toward personal recognition
levels such as President's Council. Thus, a $500 gift that is matched dollar-per-dollar by an employer
qualifies the donor for President's Council membership, which requires contributions of at least $1,000
during a fiscal year.
Does my employer match gifts?
Over 1,000 companies match gifts nationwide. Please contact the UAH donor help-line at 256-UAH-GIFT and
we are usually able to advise you immediately if your company is listed as a matching gift company. Your
company's personnel department also is a likely source for matching gift forms and information.
Matching gift history
When the General Electric Company (GE) initiated the first corporate matching gifts program in 1954,
colleges and universities were the first non-profit organizations to benefit. Higher education still
receives the largest percentage of corporate matching gift funds among non-profit organizations.
