ScholarshipsScholarships are UAH's highest priority need. Each year, it becomes more challenging for UAH to provide the financial support that our talented and diverse student body requires. The lack of scholarships and fellowships is a major barrier to a college education for many promising students. This issue is critically important because:- UAH is experiencing increased freshman enrollment - 60 percent of our 7,000 students require financial aid - Our present average award is about $1,000, less than one-third the cost of tuition UAH relies on scholarships to ensure that outstanding students have access to a college education. UAH has far fewer scholarships to offer than most of our peer institutions. UAH is committed to attracting and supporting the best and brightest students. Rising tuition costs, however, have made it increasingly difficult for students to pay for college. Our goal is to be able to offer significant scholarship support to talented students so that they can attend UAH regardless of their financial situation. We have many more qualified scholarship applicants than scholarships we can award. To attract the best and brightest of tomorrow's leaders, we need additional scholarships. The two primary opportunities for providing scholarships are: 1)Giving to the university's general scholarship pool, which awards scholarships annually, and 2)Endowing a scholarship in honor or in memory of an individual, a family, or an organization. The minimum amount to endow a scholarship in perpetuity is $20,000. This will provide a minimum of a $1000 scholarship annually since it is the university's policy to award 5 percent of the value of each fund for scholarships. Larger gifts can provide either larger awards or awards to more students. Such gifts may be in cash or securities. All gifts are fully tax deductible to the extent provided by law. Planned giving options also exist to provide gifts through wills or trusts. Pledge options also are available that may be fulfilled over a five-year period. Endowed funds are invested in the University of Alabama System Pooled Endowment Fund. This approach has enabled the endowed funds and the scholarship awards to increase at a rate much faster than inflation. As donors who established an endowed scholarship, you and your family or organization will receive an annual report from UAH with information about the scholarship recipient(s) and the financial status of the fund, including earnings and distributions. You also will be invited to the university's annual scholarship luncheon where scholarship recipients are honored and donors have an opportunity to meet the students who received their scholarships. You also will become members of the President's Council and will be invited to special events. You also should receive a thank you note annually from each student who receives the scholarship that you endow. Most importantly, you will help prepare new generations of students for success.
