Power of You - Charlesia McLin

"The gifts I receive encourage me to give back once I finish school. I know how much it means to me and I want to make that same impact in a student’s life."

In the 10th grade I took my first Biology class—I’ve been in love with it ever since. Science has always fascinated me and led me to the aspiration of becoming a dentist.

I decided to attend UAHuntsville because of the opportunity to receive personal attention from the professors. In addition, the university offers a rigorous academic curriculum that has aided in preparing me for graduate school. I am involved in the National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE), Medical Careers Club, National Panhellenic Council and the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority.

I feel very honored to have been afforded the opportunity of becoming an ALSAMP and Harold J. Wilson Scholar. Due to the sacrifice others have made for me, I am determined to maintain my GPA, even though it gets harder as the level of my courses increase.

As a recipient of the Wilson scholarship, I feel that I am continuing Dr. Wilson's mission of promoting academic excellence and increasing the number of minorities pursuing a career in science. I’ve never met Dr. Wilson, but my Advisor has shared many stories about Dr. Wilson’s character. Hearing about the type of person he was makes me want to work harder to honor his legacy.
