WHEREAS, President
Williams was asked in the September 22 letter to comment on faculty and student
input on the residence policy decision requiring all full-time freshmen to live
on-campus starting Fall 2010;
and
WHEREAS, In the
October 6 response, President Williams listed only Associate Vice President
Maxon and Mr. Maxon’s close work with Dean of Students Walter, Provost
Karbhari, and Vice President Pinner as guides to this policy;
and
WHEREAS, The
Senate believes work only among administrators does not constitute sufficient
involvement of faculty and students, especially considering the likely negative
effect on enrollment of this policy decision;
and
WHEREAS, The
faculty have been repeatedly charged by the President with increasing
recruitment and retention of students;
That the Senate insists upon more meaningful
communication with and involvement of faculty and students in all stages of
policy formulation.
That the Senate also asks President Williams to affirm
or deny administration commitment to communicate regularly with and seek input
from non-administrative-rank faculty on items that have the potential to
decrease freshmen enrollment via (1) Senate standing committees, (2)
Senate-wide meetings, and/or (3) faculty-wide memos.
The Senate also requests President Williams to release
to the Senate President the many communications received by the administration
from parents, teachers, and prospective students from the community on the
housing policy.
