What Teachers Can Do to Keep Women in Print

Feminist teachers are in a better position than most people to influence the book-buying habits of large numbers of people.  Lisa Albrecht of the University of Minnesota compiled this list of things teachers can do that will help both feminist publishers and booksellers.

1.  Encourage women's studies departments to do all their textbook ordering from women's bookstores.
2.  Encourage other department colleagues to do the same.
3.  Use feminist bookstores to do book set ups at ANY conference you are planning (feminist or otherwise).
4.  Minimize course packet copying, especially ones that don't pay writers and publishers.  Consider NOT using course packets at all!
5.  Order at least one small press/feminist book for every course that you teach.  [Even ten adoptions can make a huge difference for a smaller publisher, according to Jean Casella, Director of the Feminist Press.]
6.  Do your own special orders from feminist bookstores, and NOT from amazon.com. Bookstores can get books as fast as on-line mail order businesses.
