Undergraduate Student Accomplishments

Ruth, Beth, Mario, Dr. BellThree undergraduate English majors have had a paper accepted for publication. Ruth Johnson, Mario Burton, and Beth Clark took an independent study (EH 499) in fall 2006l from Dr. Diana Bell, focusing on writing center pedagogy. They attended the Southeastern Writing Center Association Conference in Nashville in February 2007 to present the paper that they completed for that course, and it has just been accepted for publication in a refereed journal called Young Scholars in Writing.

At that same conference, Ruth Johnson won the SWCA award for the Tutor of the Year. SWCA is the most active regional writing center association in the country. Ruth is a double major in English and Communication Arts and will graduate this summer.

New Faculty

Ms. Heather Cross will be Acting Director of the Writing Center while we continue our search for a Ph.D. trained in Composition Studies. After completing her MA in English with Certificate in Technical Writing at UAH, Ms. Cross taught English part-time for us for 6 years. While a graduate student, she was the GTA in the writing center for 2 years. At that time, she researched spatial/architectural influences on learning styles in Writing Centers, and presented her findings at a major national conference (known as 4Cs). She is interested in fostering good communication with all departments campus-wide so that the Writing Center is a place that instructors and students feel confident using. Her undergraduate degree is in Art History.

Dr. Jennifer Garlen will be Visiting Lecturer in English, replacing Kem Roper, who has taken a leave of absence to pursue a Ph.D. at the University of Louisville. Dr. Garlen has taught part-time in the English Department for nearly a decade. During that time, she completed a Ph.D. in English at Auburn University specializing in 18th century British literature. Her manuscript, Flowers of the British World: British National Identity and the Late Eighteenth-Century Courtship Novel, has been accepted pending revisions by the University of Delaware Press.
