Society for Technical Communication
The Society for Technical Communication (STC) is an international professional organization of technical writers,
editors, and illustrators, many of whom are now web designers. Students
may join at a reduced membership rate, which provides subscriptions to
publications and full access to the website. The
website includes a Jobs Database, links to chapter websites, information
about competitions, searchable indexes of publications,
and much more. The Huntsville STC chapter
sponsors a local job
listings site.
Newbie Tech Writer Job Search - this site compiles advice gathered from the TECHWR-L discussion list about jobs, resumes, portfolios, interviews and getting started in the profession.
Competitions - STC sponsors a variety of competitions, beginning at the chapter level, with chapter winners moving to the international competition. You do not have to be a member to compete. The Lone Star STC has a particularly good competition (winners viewable in PDF format).
About Technical Writing
TECHWR-L
Internet Forum for Technical Communications
http://www.raycomm.com/techwhirl/ - Techwr-L was
originally a listserv for technical writers,
teachers, and students. With over 4000 subscribers, it needed a website
to support the discussion list. The website is set up for searching the
archives. You can join the list (it is VERY active), or visit as a guest
(recommended). A search on "career story" can bring up 200
messages!
