A really good online source is www.bookfinder.com, where you can type in a title and get a list of new and used bookstores that have the book for sale. They give the price, linked to the store. Bookfinder will list the chain stores as well as the independents, and you can decide from there.
My favorite online independent is Powells.com, which has six bricks & mortar stores in Portland, Oregon, and makes their entire inventory available online.
