*The STC National and the STC Atlanta survey both reported only salary means, the average of all salaries for that job function, using actual salaries.  Our other data tables report means for comparison to these data.  The median salary is useful because we collected salary data in $5000 ranges, so our means are somewhat skewed, especially for web developers, in which a respondent reported a salary under $25,000.  This table reports the median for the top four job functions in order to correct for that skewing.  The median is the number halfway down the list.  For example, if we arranged the 57 writer surveys from highest to lowest salary, then the median would be the 29th survey; half the salaries are above it, and half below it.
