engineeringresearchpicUAHuntsville has the largest research expenditures in the nation (more than $83 million in 2009-10) compared to all other public universities of its size (~7,700 students). Two of College of Engineering research disciplines rank in the top 50 in the nation in federal research funding, according to the National Science Foundation. Mechanical Engineering was 26th and Electrical Engineering at 49th.

UAHuntsville was among 17 research organizations and universities in the U.S. invited to join the National Systems Engineering Research Center created by the Department of Defense and National Security Agency.

The College of Engineering faculty and students interact with several University research centers including Propulsion Research Center, Center for Applied Optics, Space Plasma & Aeronomic Research, and Rotorcraft Systems Engineering and Simulation Center.
