Biography

Dr. Chen has over 25 years of experience in developing computational methodologies and physical models for obtaining solutions to complex multi-physics problems in fluid dynamics, aerothermodynamics, propulsion systems, aero-optics and lab-on-chip micro/nano fluidics. He received PhD in Chemical Engineering from Michigan State University in 1984. He is currently the Chair and Professor of Chemical Engineering at The University of Alabama in Huntsville. His awards include University of Alabama Foundation Award for Outstanding Research, American Institute of Aeronautics and Aerospace Outstanding Young Aerospace Engineer of the Year award, multiple NASA Group Achievement Awards, and National Research Council Resident Researcher award. His research in propulsion related areas include liquid jet breakup, atomization, multi-component fuel evaporation, injector design, spray and combustion, aero-thermal environment of hypersonic vehicles, as well as rocket nozzle film cooling problems. Dr. Chen is a Fellow of American Society of Mechanical Engineers and an Associate Fellow of American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics. He has graduated 14 Ph.D. and 22 MS and is currently supervising several graduate students and post-doc associates. His recent major research projects include "Microfluidic Modeling on Lab-on-Chip" (NASA LOCAD 2004-2006), "Lox-Methane Injector Modeling" (NASA 2006-2009), "Density Wave Instability in Regenerating Film Cooling of Lox-Methane Engines" (NASA 2009-2010), "Computational Aero-Optics Simulation Development" (DOD 2010-2013).
