Write a memo briefly explaining what the topic of your project will be and how you plan to meet RFP requirements. This topic memo is the first of two “warm-up” assignments intended to get you thinking and writing about your project. Direct the memo to your instructor, but be prepared to read it to the class or your discussion group. Type the memo and keep it to one page, single-spaced. Your memo should include the following information:
What—What will you produce? (A booklet? A brochure and report? A user’s guide? A manual? A technical report? etc.)
For Whom—Are you writing this document for a specific client? If so, who is the client? Who will be the audience (the readers) for the document(s)?
Why— Why is the document necessary? How will your readers use it?
How—How will you approach the project? Will you incorporate research of print sources directly into the main document, or will you write a separate literature review? If you’re planning to do a literature review, annotated bibliography, or report, what will be its topic? Where will you obtain your printed sources? Will you be doing any primary research (interviews, surveys, questionnaires) in addition to the research of printed materials?
How Long—About how long do you think your document will be?
Problems—Do you anticipate any problems with the project you plan? For example, are you sure you’ll be able to find enough printed sources? Are you sure your project can be done within the short time we have available during the semester?
