Requirements Summary: CM/EH 301 Term Project
(See Chapter 1 of your textbook for detailed specifications.)

The project you choose for EH/CM 301 must meet the following criteria:

The project can take many forms.  Choose the one that best suits your major.

One-Document Projects

A. Technical report answering a question or solving a problem for a client

B.  Documented Manual or how-to guide with sources documented within the manual or guide
Example: A 12-page technical report describing results of experiments on the PharmChem Sweat Patch designed to determine whether the patch is susceptible to environmental contamination. 
Client: funding agency. 
Audience: managers who will decide whether to use the patch for drug-testing and scientists who will do follow-up studies. 
Example: a 14-page guide to setting up a small saltwater aquarium, with sources cited within the guide. 
Client: owner of a local hobby shot.
Audience: customers buying aquariums.

Two-Document Projects

C. Brochure, website, or other short document + a second document using sources (e.g., a report, literature review, or annotated bibliography).  

D. Manual or guide written without the help of sources + a second document using sources  (e.g., a report, literature review, or annotated bibliography).  

  • Example: a one-sheet, trifold brochure introducing students to the student organization SEDS (Students for the Exploration and Development of Space) + a nine-page annotated bibliography of publications about two experiments the group has followed or participated in (SEDSAT and SEASIS). 

  • Example: web pages created to upgrade a local hospital surgery website, including a new home page and six content pages, plus a report  describing  the student's study of other hospital websites and research on the latest guidelines for developing web pages for medical groups and similar service providers.   
  • Example: a ten-page users manual  explaining operating software you’ve created + a four-page annotated bibliography about programming in Oracle. 
    Audience for the manual: software users. Audience for the bibliography: other programmers.
  • Example:  a 5-page manual explaining how to use a capillary electrophoresis (CE) machine, plus a 5-page review of major research areas for which molecular biologists use the CE machine.  Audience for the manual: lab technicians.  Audience for the literature review: undergraduates seeking topics for projects that will capitalize on their access to the CE machine.
