Undergraduate Candidates

Preadmission Requirements for Undergraduates

File an Intent to Apply to the Teacher Education Program (TEP) with the Certification Officer as soon a decision is made to seek teacher certification. Apply for a Program of Study (POS) with the college advisor prior to the end of the sophomore year. In addition, students must meet the following requirements:

  1. No more than 2 courses of the General Education Requirements remain to be taken.
  2. Minimum GPA of 2.5 and grades of C or higher in EH 101 & 102 (or EH 105), CM 113, MA 230, MA 231, and PY 201.
  3. EED students must earn at least a 2.5, with no grade lower than a "C" in each of the following area: English, History/Social Sciences, Mathematics, and Science.
  4. Submit finger prints for background check by ABI and FBI

Undergraduate Admission to the Teacher Education Program

Admission to the university does not qualify a student for admission to the Teacher Education Program. Students must submit an Application for Admission to the Teacher Education Program during the Block I semester of the education courses. In addition, students must meet the following requirements:

  1. Minimum 2.75 GPA in Block I Education courses with no grade lower than a C.
  2. Minimum 2.5 GPA in major or second area of study with no grade lower than C.
  3. Satisfactory completion of specified requirements in ED 301, 305, 308 including writing and field assignments.
  4. Satisfactory ratings on Interview Process, Dispositions
  5. Program of Study (POS) on file.

Admission for transfer students

Transfer students who have completed two years of undergraduate study may be eligible to apply for admission to the TEP if they have a grade point average of 2.5 for 9 semester hours of coursework at UAH and meet other preadmission requirements.

Admission by reciprocity

Students who have been admitted to a teacher education program at an accredited university or college in Alabama may apply for reciprocal admission to the Teacher Education Program (TEP) with the Certification Officer or the Department Chair.

Continuing the Teacher Education Program

Requirements include:

  1. Minimum 2.75 GPA in Education courses with no grade lower than "C."
  2. Minimum 2.5 GPA in second area of study or teaching field with no grade lower than "C."
  3. Satisfactory completion of Blocks 2, 3, & 4 Field Experiences.
  4. Satisfactory ratings on Dispositions Ratings by Education, teaching field faculty, and P-12 mentor teachers.
  5. Passing Score on APTT & Praxis II.

If the above requirements are not met, a Professional Development Plan (PDP) will be initiated. Candidates who do not meet the conditions of the PDP may be dismissed from the Teacher Education Program.


Alternative Master's (5th Year) Candidates

Preadmission Requirements for Alternative Master's Program

File an Intent to Apply for Admission to the Teacher Education Program (TEP) with the Certification Officer as soon as a decision is made to seek graduate level certification and apply for a Program of Study (POS) with the college advisor. In addition, students must meet the following requirements:

  1. Meet UAH requirements for unconditional admission to the University and the major department as stated in the UAH Graduate Catalog.
  2. Completion of undergraduate major in teaching field or, if an academic major is not on the transcript, 32 semester hours in the teaching field including at least 19 hours of upper division courses.
  3. Completion of undergraduate general education courses, including work in humanities, social science, science, and humanities.
  4. Minimum GPA 2.5 or higher in undergraduate teaching field courses.
  5. Completion of CM 113 or comparable public speaking course with grade of "C" or better.
  6. Enroll in Pre-Admission Course: ED 301.
  7. Submit fingerprints for background check by ABI and FBI.

Admission to the Alternative Master's (5th Year) Teacher Education Program

Admission to the university does not guarantee admission to the Teacher Education Program. Students must have an Application for Admission to the Teacher Education Program on file with the Certification Officer and must verify that an approved Program of Study (POS) is on file in the UAH Department of Education before or during the first semester of education courses. In addition, students must meet the following requirements:

  1. Successfully complete ED 301.
  2. Minimum 3.0 GPA in first semester of graduate education and teaching field courses with no grade lower than "C."
  3. Satisfactory completion of specified writing and field assignments in all education courses.
  4. Satisfactory ratings on Interview Process, Dispositions Ratings Education faculty and P-12 mentor teachers) and Application Essay.
  5. Satisfactory External Faculty Letter of Recommendation

Continuing in the Alternative Master's (5th Year) Teacher Education Program

Requirements include:

  1. Minimum 3.0 GPA in Education and teaching field courses with no grade lower than "C."
  2. Satisfactory completion of all Field Experiences.
  3. Satisfactory ratings on Dispositions Ratings by education faculty, and P-12 mentor teachers.
  4. Passing Score on the Alabama Prospective Teacher Test (APTT) and Praxis II.
  5. Passing score on written comprehensive exam.
  6. If the above requirements are not met, a Personalized Professional Development Plan the candidate will be dismissed from Teacher Education Program.

Advanced Graudate Candidates

Admission Requirements for All Advanced Candidates

  1. Unconditional admission to UAH and major department (See current graduate catalog).
  2. Valid Alabama Class B Teaching Certificate in same or broader field in which advanced certification is sought.
  3. GPA of ≥3.0 in undergraduate teaching field courses and education courses; no grade lower than C.
  4. Application for Admission to Teacher Education Program (TEP) on file in Education Department.
  5. Submit Application Essay to Department Chair
  6. Program of Study (POS) on file in Education Department

Additional Requirements for Reading Specialist (P-12) Candidates

  1. Two years of successful classroom teaching experience
  2. A valid baccalaureate certificate (Class B) in an area of education
  3. Certification in Early Childhood, Elementary, or Collaborative Teacher Education; or two reading courses, one of which is introductory.

Graduate Advanced Mid-Point Review

(Completed after completion of 18-21 hours)

  1. ≥ 3.0 GPA in Education courses and in teaching field courses; no grade lower than C.
  2. Three satisfactory letters of recommendation (1 from education faculty, 1 from teaching field faculty, 1 from P-12 administrator or cooperating teacher).
  3. Satisfactory progress in compiling evidence for exit project.
