(K-6 or 6-12 certification options)
The Collaborative Teacher Program is an optional second area of certification for either elementary or secondary education candidates. The program prepares teachers to better meet the diverse needs of all children, including those who have been determined to be exceptional and who receive services under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act. Students in the Collaborative Program complete courses and participate in extensive field experiences that introduce them to a variety of exceptionalities and help them become aware of the critical issues relevant to the delivery of services to exceptional children.
Elementary Education (K-6) candidates will complete the Collaborative Teacher courses as part of their second area of study. They will also complete an additional internship in Collaborative-Special Education following the successful completion of the elementary internship.
Secondary Education (6-12) candidates who choose to add the Collaborative Teacher area of study to their first teaching field (English, history, biology, etc.) should consult with the Certification Officer and the special education advisor in the Education Department. Individual programs of study, including the 21 hours listed below, will be developed for any student choosing to add the collaborative teacher area of study to their major teaching field. Secondary candidates will complete an additional internship in Collaborative-Special Education following the successful completion of the middle/high school internship.
All candidates who successfully complete the coursework and internship requirements, will be eligible to apply for dual certification in Collaborative Teacher-Special Education and in their chosen certification area (either K-6 Elementary Education or 6-12 Secondary Education teaching field).
Candidates will complete the following courses in addition to EDC 301: Teaching Exceptional Children:
