Federally funded grants are awarded by DOD and NASA with increased funding from NOAA, NSF and NIH. Research is carried out across five colleges and 15 research centers. Research expenditures for FY 2008 were $65 million (excluding construction).

UAHuntsville is in the unique position of having contractual relationships with NASA, the Army, and the many contractors that serve both organizations.  The recent Base Realignment and Closure (BRAC) is making Huntsville one of the core defense areas in the US, bringing tremendous R & D, academic program development, and employment opportunities.  The area is experiencing growth in the private sector as well with expansion in the manufacturing and aerospace industries.

Under President David B. Williams, UAHuntsville has embarked on an ambitious and far-reaching growth process called “The Power of Ten” which will insure the institution’s place as a major research university in the twenty-first century.  Major initiatives are already underway including establishment of new degrees in modeling and simulation, the focused group hires in Life-Cycle Optimization—Integrating Systems Engineering, Supply Chain Management, and Modeling and Simulation, and an emphasis on aerospace engineering and sciences and systems engineering spearheaded by the recent hiring of Dr. Michael Griffin, as the Eminent Scholar and holder of the King-McDonald Endowed Chair in the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering.

HUNTSVILLE

Huntsville and the surrounding region are pleasant and prosperous. The city nestles between the wooded mesas of the Cumberland Plateau and the winding waters of the Tennessee River in North Alabama. Centrally located in the Southeast, Huntsville is less than 200 miles from Atlanta and Memphis and 100 miles or less from Birmingham, Chattanooga, and Nashville. The Huntsville International airport (HSV) provides easy access to travel for Huntsville residents. Winters are short and mild and snowfall rare. The Huntsville/Madison County area has a population of 300,000. Of those, as many as 10 percent are natives of another country with more than 100 different languages and dialects spoken in the community. Known for leadership in aerospace, defense, electronics, telecommunications, manufacturing and a burgeoning biotechnology enterprise, Huntsville is poised for continued growth and expanded success. The city hosts the HudsonAlpha Institute for Biotechnology and two high-tech federal facilities, the Army’s Redstone Arsenal and NASA’s Marshall NASA - Marshall Space Flight Center  Huntsville’s Cummings Research Park is the second largest research park in the country, and was voted the Most Outstanding Research/Science Park in the World in 1997. Forbes Magazine named the city the sixth best place in the country for business; Foreign Direct Investments named Huntsville America’s #1 Small City of the Future; and Kiplinger’s selected Huntsville as the number one city in which to live.  Several of Huntsville’s public schools rank among the best in the state and in the South. In addition to UAHuntsville, the city is home to several other institutions of higher education.

Because of the preponderance of business, technology, education and government enterprises that make Huntsville their home, Huntsville is often characterized as the "Silicon Valley of the South,” albeit with a much more acceptable cost of living, and considerably more room for growth and land development. In recent years, Huntsville has increasingly been recognized as an especially attractive community for small business entrepreneurship and continued growth, and as a community praised for its easy and welcoming lifestyle. A diverse business climate has made Huntsville a true melting pot of cultures.

Cultural and entertainment attractions in Huntsville are growing with the area and include art and folk museums, The U.S. Space and Rocket Center, a professional symphony orchestra, civic festivals for arts and music, concerts, an outstanding chamber music series, several theatre organizations, and professional sports teams. The area includes easy access to fresh water lakes, fishing, boating, hiking nature trails, camping, and other diverse outdoor activities.
