The University of Alabama in Huntsville Policies for Students Impacted By Hurricane Katrina

Hurricane Katrina has had a devastating impact on the families of students enrolled at UAH who are from Alabama, Mississippi and Louisiana as well as students from universities closed in the aftermath of the storm. Their lives and educational experience have been affected in ways we cannot begin to fathom. Consequently, our response to the students will be compassionate and flexible to ensure that we develop a coordinated assistance program that addresses the unique needs of each and every student.

For currently enrolled students UAH will provide the following assistance:

The goal is to provide assistance to our students that is as seamless as possible. To make this a reality UAH will establish a single point of contact. Charger Central (chargercentral@uah.edu, 256.824.7777) will involve the appropriate offices (academic advising, counseling center, campus ministries, and financial aid) in providing students with the appropriate advice and assistance for their unique needs.

For students displaced from other universities by Hurricane Katrina:

UAH is prepared to accommodate as many students as possible who were enrolled in other institutions impacted by Hurricane Katrina. The following actions/procedures have been adopted to give such students maximum flexibility to continue their education uninterrupted by enrolling in UAH:

*A central point of contact for displaced students or parents has been established at UAH.

Charger Central - chargercentral@email.uah.edu, 256.824.7777
Hours of operation: Mon Thurs 7:30 a.m. to 6 p.m., Friday 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.

*Student admissions policies for UAH will be followed, modified as necessary to accommodate this emergency.

*UAH will be flexible on payment terms and will work individually with prospective students on deferred payment plans. This may include deferring payment until the student receives reimbursement from the impacted university.

*Normal tuition and fee assessment policies, including determination of residency, will apply. UAH will work with newly admitted or currently enrolled students from hurricane-impacted areas to examine all means of financial support for their educational costs.

*UAH will assist prospective students in obtaining financial aid or coordinating financial aid issues with institutions where they were previously enrolled.

*UAH will assist students in obtaining suitable on-campus housing where possible, or off-campus housing.

*Special contractual arrangements with home institutions may be considered to accommodate unique needs of Professional and Graduate students.

UAH anticipates that the need for these services will be greater for the Spring 2006 Semester than for the Fall 2005 Semester, since a large number of the affected students will need to take this semester to address their individual situations. The University of Alabama in Huntsville stands ready to continue these policies as needed throughout the rebuilding of the Gulf Coast.

The Charger Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) has set up a drop-off box for donations to support relief of the Katrina disaster. Please feel free to drop off items in the lobby of Spragins Hall on the UAH campus when you come to the volleyball games or at Charger Field when you come to a soccer game during the month of September.

* Non-perishable food items
* Toiletries (soap, toothbrush, toothpaste, shampoo, deodorant, etc).
* Infant and Toddler supplies (diapers all sizes, formula, bottles, baby food, etc.)

These donations will be taken to the Huntsville Fire Department, which is a drop off location for efforts coordinated by the Turner Disaster Relief Foundation, the Salvation Army, the Tennessee Valley Fire Fighters and the Marine Corps as heard on Star 99.1. Click on www.star99.fm for more information about these efforts.

The Indian Student Organization and The International Cultural Organization will be hosting an Indian Classical Music Concert on September 10, 2005 from 7:00pm to 9:00pm in Chan Auditorium.
