The Department of Biological Sciences will be introducing a new course
in the Curriculum for Spring 2003. The details are listed below.
BYS556: Advanced Molecular Techniques
Laboratory techniques in molecular biology, including methods for
identification, cloning, and characterization of genes.
Prerequisites:
BYS119, BYS219, BYS340, BYS519 (could be taken
concurrently)
Credit Hours: 3.

Thomas J. Dimopoullos became an environmentalist because of his concern for the earth. A native of New York, he served as an engineer, geologist and environmentalist in Africa, Asia, and Europe during his career. He made a difference in many lives through his environmental and humanitarian efforts and as Professor of Biological Sciences at UAH.
The Thomas James Dimopoullos Memorial Endowment established by George and Sophie Dimopoullos in loving memory of their brother, Thomas James Dimopoullos, provides support for a graduate research assistantship(s) to be awarded to one or more full-time graduate student(s) enrolled in the Department of Biological Sciences with preference given to student(s) whose research focus is on environmentally relevant biological problems in a program of study requiring a thesis. The award is based on academic merit, without regard to demonstrated financial need, with preference given to students of Greek heritage if any are available in the pool of applicants.
To be considered for this Fellowship, applicants must meet the general admission requirements to the Graduate School and Department of Biological Sciences.
In addition to defrayment of tuition and fees, the award(s) may include other expenses such as a monthly stipend as may be determined by the University within its policies and procedures of administering graduate research assistantships. The recipient of this award may be eligible for renewal for one additional year of graduate study providing the recipient(s) remains in good academic standing.

The applicant should have completed a Bachelor of Science degree in a curriculum suitable for preparation for graduate study in the biological sciences, have attained an overall GPA of at least 3.0 and at least a 3.2 average in relevant science courses and achieved a score of 1500 or better on the GRE.
