Natural Products Group

Introduction

The UAH Natural Products Group was founded to screen tropical plant extracts for medicinal and commercial applications. This interdisciplinary group formed of the Biological Sciences and the Chemistry Departments have traveled to Costa Rica and Australia in search of prospective plants from deep within the rain forests.

This collaborative effort combines the talents of

to head the Natural Products Group which has had preliminary success uncovering one extract which has shown remarkable antifungal activity. Another extract may contain a useful antitumor extract which has been shown to kill human liver cancer cells while appearing not to harm normal liver cell cultures.

Undergraduate Involvement

A large undergraduate involvement is a key to the success of the Natural Products Group. To date 26 undergraduates have assisted the Group in collection and extraction of chemicals from plants found in Costa Rica's Monteverde Cloud Forest Preserve and Australia's rain forests as well.
