The floral essential oil of Guettarda poasana has been screened for biological activity was found to exhibit antifungal activity ( Aspergillus niger, Saccharomyces cerevisiae, and Candida albicans). A gas chromatographic / mass spectral analysis showed the floral essential oil was composed largely of benzyl alcohol (77%) with lesser amounts of cinnamyl alcohol (11%), 1-indanol (8%), and phenethyl alcohol (4%). Cinnamyl alcohol and 1-indanol are potent inhibitors of both S. cerevisiae and C. albicans.
