Setzer, W.N., K.W. Whitaker, and R.O. Lawton. 1992. A chemical ecological study of the components of the essential oil of the eastern red cedar (Juniperus virginiana L.) from three habitats in Huntsville, Alabama. Castanea 57: 209-213.

The essential oil of red cedar (Juniperus virginiana) has been obtained from the needles of a number of individuals, both male and female, from three different locations in Huntsville, Alabama. These essential oils have been analyzed using gas chromatographic / mass spectral techniques. The volatile terpene and lignan components and their relative and absolute abundances, and their relation to plant vigor, gender, and habitat, have been examined.
