Dimopoullos Fellowship

The Biological Sciences undergraduate program at UAH is designed to offer each student exposure to the intellectual breadth of the modern life sciences -- from cell and molecular biology, through microbiology, integrated physiology and anatomy, to ecology and environmental biology. Programs of study lead to specialized training in a variety of fields: secondary education, pre- professional programs in medicine and dentistry, certified programs in medical technology, microbiology, environmental science and conservation biology. Many students continue their education in graduate and professional programs.

Students in the Biological Sciences develop their own specific programs of study in consultation with personal faculty advisors. All programs of study have a common core of courses: Principles of Biology, Organismal biology; Genetics; Cell and Molecular Biology; and a capstone seminar course taken in the senior year. Students choose their faculty advisors to help them tailor the rest of their program to fit their particular interests and professional goals.

Biological Sciences majors are strongly encouraged to become involved in the research programs of the department. Faculty advisors assist in arranging undergraduate research opportunities in fields as diverse as cell biology and marine ecology. In addition to the laboratories of the Department, working arrangements for UAH students can be established at the UAH Laboratory for Structural Biology, at NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center Life Science facilities, Dauphin Island Sea Lab on the Gulf of Mexico and at local biotech companies. UAH honors students are encouraged to set up undergraduate honors thesis research programs under the direction of their advisors. Since the Biological Sciences faculty are all actively involved in research as well as being strongly committed to undergraduate teaching and advising, undergraduates in all fields have the opportunity to become involved in the presentation of research results in professional journals and at state, regional and national scientific meetings.
