Once again, UAH is teaming up with the Womens Economic Development Council to celebrate womens history month with a theatrical event and Womens Community Leadership Awards. This years production celebrates the 150th anniversary of the Womens Rights movement with an original play about the life of woman suffragist Elizabeth Cady Stanton.
New York actor Elizabeth Perry stars in her acclaimed play Sun Flower, named for Elizabeth Cady Stantons pen name. A homemaker and mother of seven, Stanton was considered the "brains" of the nineteenth-century womens rights movement, a woman who worked tirelessly for woman suffrage for over fifty years, yet did not live to see the woman suffrage bill pass in 1920. Stanton organized the first Womens Rights conference in the United States, held in her home town, Seneca Falls, NY, in 1848, 150 years ago.
Elizabeth Perry has performed Sun Flower in Washington, DC, off-off Broadway, and throughout the country. She makes the history books come alive in her vivid dramatization of Stanton and the many famous people in her life, including Stantons protegé Susan B. Anthony, and her friend, the abolitionist Frederick Douglass. An introduction to Elizabeth Cady Stantons life is an inspirational and illuminating experience.
On the same evening, local non-profit organizations will honor women they have singled out for their leadership and service to the community. Last years awards ceremony honored 35 local women for their community leadership, a striking testimony to the importance of women in this community. A reception will follow the leadership awards celebration and theatrical performance.
The event is open to the community. Seating is limited, so advance tickets are highly recommended and may be purchased for $15 at Shavers Books on Whitesburg Drive or by calling the Womens Studies program office at UAH (890-6210, Morton Hall 344). A limited number of tickets will be available at the door for $20. Co-sponsors include the Womens Economic Development Council, the UAH Womens Studies program, and the UAH Honors Program.
