Who Can Enter? The contest is open to any student, male or female, in a Madison County, Alabama middle school (grades 6 through 8) or high school (grades 9 through 12). Students in public, private, and home school are eligible.
This Year's Topic: The theme of this year's contest is “Confronting Stereotypes: Moving Beyond Traditional Gender Roles.”
For the topic, we ask students to investigate the ways in which a particular stereotype impacts women. They could consider business, industry, politics, education or family stereotypes. Feel free to incorporate this general guideline into a specific assignment that reinforces your curriculum.
Please note that generalized histories of great women such as Elizabeth Cady Stanton, Rosa Parks, or even Princess Diana do not fulfill the requirements of the contest and will be disqualified. Instead, you should develop your own argument about issues which concern women today. We encourage students to conduct their own primary research by conducting interviews or directly observing women in the workplace. However, if resources are used, whether primary or secondary, they must be properly cited according to MLA format.
