PHL 335 Feminist Philosophy

Usual instructor: Dr. Bill Wilkerson

The course will cover basic and contemporary issues in feminist theory. Topics include: what is oppression and sexism? Is gender a natural category or a social construction? Can a feminist theory account for the differences of race, class, and sexual orientation among women, or is it impossible to develop a "unified" feminist outlook? Is there a standpoint unique to women? Can men be feminist? Readings will be drawn from authors such as Alcoff, de Beauvoir, Butler, Davis, Frye, hooks, Irigaray, Jaggar, Spelman, Young, and others.  It is recommended, but not required, that students have taken one philosophy course before taking this course.

This is a required course in the Women's Studies minor.
